English The world of work is constantly changing, and human capital is no exception. With a growing number of initiatives in favour of inclusion for all, it is now crucial to consider all the potential categories of people who tend to be marginalized or discriminated against in the labour market. There is a notable lack of priority given to the topic of disability in the workplace, and this thesis aims to investigate the reasons behind this observed situation in the perimeter of Geneva. The candidate category selected for this research is wheelchair users.
To this end, in addition to the collection of secondary data, interviews were conducted to assess the current climate on access to employment of people with reduced mobility in wheelchairs in Geneva. Using the axial coding method, the three main issues identified following the data analysis are: lack of knowledge, lack of evolution and lack of specialization. Companies do not know how to approach and address the concept of disability in their activities. This lack of awareness and the absence of tools lead to concerns and a perception of the situation that is not in favour of candidates with reduced mobility. Furthermore, additional progress is necessary. The barriers to this advancement include a lack of incentives for companies, mentality and priorities. Finally, the lack of solutions that align with the realities of the primary labour market and the absence of direct and on-site assistance for companies represent additional obstacles.
The recommendations are primarily based on the concept of disability rather than on reduced mobility, given that the primary obstacle identified is the concept and approach to disability itself. The main issued raised at hand was not one of physical barriers but rather a matter of perception. The first solution is to establish a centrally coordinated programme to assist employers in managing effectively the process of employing people with disabilities, including people in wheelchairs. Then, the provision of clear, simple, accessible and public documentation on disability and employment has also been deemed relevant to be at the disposal of employers. Finally, practical advice on best practices have been formulated for recruiters to reduce any form of discriminatory behavior in the recruitment process.
