Test anxiety has been shown to negatively impact memory retrieval and lead to decreased performance in evaluative situations. Retrieval practice, the notion of actively recalling information, is a learning strategy consistently associated with memory enhancement. Currently, there is no experimental evidence investigating the impact of learning with retrieval practice under test anxious conditions. Our study investigates whether learning with retrieval practice can overcome the negative effects of test anxiety on memory. In the learning session, participants learned two educational texts using a retrieval practice strategy for one text and a restudy strategy as a control for the second text. One week later, participants performed a memory recall task where they were instructed to recall as many items from both texts as possible. Prior to memory recall, half of the participants were placed in a test-anxious condition via a set of test-anxiety-inducing instructions where they were told that the link between their intelligence and memory is examined and that they would perform an IQ test and a memory test. The other half was placed in a neutral testing condition where they were instructed they would perform a puzzle task and a memory task to examine the link between memory and problem-solving. Preliminary results replicate the finding that retrieval practice improves memory compared to restudy. Moreover, they suggest that retrieval practice may be beneficial to memory against being in a test anxious state prior to recall.
